I’ve been digging into the new iPhone 17 lineup, and what I’m finding is a real mixed bag. On one hand, I’m impressed by what I’m seeing with the screen’s durability. But on the other hand, I’m hearing some pretty serious talk about overheating and even bending, and it’s giving me pause.
After I have done drop test video and I have to say, the iPhone 17 Pro’s screen is tough. They compared it to last year’s iPhone 16 Pro, and the difference was night and day. Apple went back to an aluminum frame this year, and while that seems to scuff up a bit easier, the new “second-generation Ceramic Shield” on the glass is no joke. I saw it take drop after drop without shattering, while the iPhone 16 Pro’s screen and back were a mess pretty early on.
But here’s where my excitement starts to fade with something came up that got my attention. JerryRigEverything actually bent the new, super-thin iPhone Air. That instantly brought back memories of the whole “Bendgate” fiasco, and it’s not a good look.
On top of that, I’ve seen some really concerning scenario about the iPhone 17 Pro Max overheating. The phone gets hot while charging and even during normal use. A tech enthusiat even posted what he say is a look inside the phone, suggesting the cooling system is flawed because the vapor chamber is connected to the battery instead of the CPU and there’s no thermal paste. If that’s true, it’s a major design flaw.
So, here’s my take: Apple has clearly done something right with the screen technology. But I can’t ignore the red flags about the phone’s structural integrity and potential for overheating. It feels like for every step forward, there might be a step back. I’m going to be keeping a close eye on this as more people get their hands on the new iPhones. For now, I’d tell anyone thinking of buying one to be cautious.
